Homers vs. Maulers, April 13, 1993
THE GOOD GUYS
Richard, Raul, Doug, Monica, their daughter Holly, Tim, Amy, Don C., Beth, her
friend Susie Horn, her husband Mark, their son Chris, Brian, John Chang, Ron
Baalke, Kelly, and Laurie.
THE GAME
The Maulers lucked out in this one. After we had set them up for a fall by
spotting them a 10-run lead, the game was called and declared null and void in
the bottom of the sixth when Tim "pulled a ligament in the top of his foot"
(sez Amy) while running to third base after hitting what should have been the
first Homer home run of the year. Here's a nightmare for Bill and Hillary to
consider in their health care reforms: Tim, Amy, Laurie, and I had to wait
around 90 minutes at Huntington before they told us that Cigna wouldn't
authorize treatment there, after which Amy had to take him to an open Cigna
somewhere in L.A. while Laurie and I snuck out the back. OK, maybe that's not
a nightmare because you think, heck, 90 wasted minutes in a hospital is
nothing special, but, boy, doesn't that (i.e. our own expectations of hospital
service) say something about health care in the U.S. Ok, ok, I'll shut up.
HIGHLIGHTS
Tim's hit was our best of the day - a clean, hard shot over the left fielder.
Raul also hit a nice triple to right-center, and Chris (leave it to a
12-year-old) got the first Homer hit of the season. Defensively, we were
neither good nor bad. The Maulers just loved my pitching and showed their
appreciation by batting around in the first inning. Our only glaring error
that inning was a ground ball hit back to me that we might have turned into a
double play except that I threw the ball into left field. Later, John and Amy
miscommunicated and let a high fly ball fall in between them, but that kind of
error ought to go away in time. The defense was otherwise solid, and Kelly
did make a nice put-out on a hard ground ball to third late in the game.
MONEY
Two more people have paid, raising the number of non-deadbeats to 10. This
station thanks you for your support, but we'll be on the air until...
SCHEDULE
I ran into Sam Dolinar yesterday before the game. He's a C league mucky-muck
who is actually a very nice guy. He said that C league would not start next
week because, for one, he had not yet made the schedule, which therefore had
not yet been distributed. He did assure me that we would start on the week of
April 26.
Some of us mentioned having a practice next week; Thursday (April 22) seemed
to be the preferred day. Send me e-mail, call me at (30)6-6192, or notify me
in some other way if you do want a practice next Thursday. I think if I get 6
or more firm commitments by this Friday, we'll do it. Otherwise, we'll just
have to kick butt cold when the season starts.
